Owner and Head Chef Chris Shoniker took over Rural Roots Catering four years ago, and ever since has been upholding and expanding the company’s mission to provide a reliable, high quality and above all versatile Gourmet Catering Service.
Chris knows that everyone has a culinary vision – though they may not be chefs, or even know the first thing about cooking – and it is his job to understand what it is and bring it to their table.
Rural Roots Catering also recognizes, that a huge event isn’t the only place people need great food. In fact, Chris says some of his favorite services are to small house parties of close friends and family, where he gets to take a more hands-on, interactive approach: introducing courses, talking about recipes, recommending wines and sharing tidbits of culinary knowledge with the guests.
At the same time, he loves the gratifying feeling of catering a large elaborate Wedding Service and being heartily thanked by a happy new couple for his role on their special Wedding Day.
Chris Shoniker is a perfectionist. He knows that people eat food with their eyes before their mouth, and strives to make it pleasing to both with painstaking preparation and presentation. Whenever possible, he manages an entire event personally – setting up the displays, cooking and serving the meal and restocking the buffet tables with his own eye for quality and detail. When an event calls for servers and additional chefs, Chris still does all the preparation and oversees the service at every stage.
Rural Roots doesn’t discriminate or get choosy: they are committed to tracking any culinary challenge for any type of event, and the same is true when it comes to location. Chris will happily arrange to bring his talents wherever they are needed, and won’t balk at a major undertaking – Rural Roots Catering spent three days in Tobermory for a Wedding, where they catered the rehearsal dinner, the service and an after-wedding brunch the following morning.
Chris is working furiously to develop fresh and exciting menus. He also makes a constant effort to learn and grow, expanding his own gourmet horizons and those of the business. Armed with two years of culinary management training and ten years of industry experience, he is always pushing to find new clients and take on diverse new projects.
